Does Session™ Key work with FL Studio?
The tempo, yes. The key, no. FL Studio has no global project key, so there is nothing in the project for an outside tool to write one into, and a send carries the BPM only. The detected key stays in the menu bar readout, with its confidence mark, and the scale is set by hand.

Why only the tempo is written
Session™ Key reads the key and BPM from whatever is playing through the Mac's audio output and shows both in the menu bar with a confidence mark on every read. When the reading locks, one send brings FL Studio forward and hands over the tempo, and the confirmation names the BPM that went.
The key stops there, and the reason sits in FL Studio rather than in the send. FL Studio has no global project key, so a hand-off has no field to write one into. The detected key stays in the menu bar the whole time, carrying its confidence mark, and the scale is typed in by hand.
Detection runs on the device. No audio is uploaded, recorded or stored off the Mac, which is the difference that matters when the sample being chopped is an unreleased record.
The one-time setup
- Choose FL Studio as the DAWThe controller installs automatically, and a setup card names the one selection left to make. There is nothing to download separately.
- Select the controller once inside FL StudioA single selection. From that point the route is in place and nothing has to be repeated per project.
- Send the tempo with a hotkeyLock a reading, press the send hotkey, and FL Studio comes forward as the project tempo is applied. The confirmation names the BPM that went.
Where it stops
- The key is not written. FL Studio has no global project key, so only the tempo is sent. Nothing on this page and nothing in the app claims otherwise.
- Platform. macOS 14.4 or later, Apple Silicon. There is no Windows build and no Intel build.
- The selection inside FL Studio is not optional. Until the controller is selected there, a send has nowhere to land. It is one selection, once, not a step repeated per project.
- It reads what is playing. The source is the Mac's audio output, so a sample sitting in the browser unplayed is not analyzed. Something has to be sounding.
- An update can change a hand-off. A macOS or FL Studio release that arrives after a given version of Session™ Key can change how the hand-off behaves. Fixes ship through the app's built-in updater.
- No accuracy figure is published for Session™ Key, and none appears on this site. Every read carries a confidence mark instead, and when two tempos are equally defensible at half or double time both are named.
