The workflow difference

Zoom documents Original sound for musicians, high-fidelity music mode and stereo settings. It would be inaccurate to describe every Zoom call as a fixed low-quality mono stream. The result depends on the enabled mode, devices and routing.

When a mix sounds different on a call, first verify the music mode and source routing. A dedicated Playback stream separates the music from the conversational audio path, allowing the call to remain the place for discussion.

SESSION™ Playback at a glance

Price
$9.99 a month or $59 a year
Requirements
macOS 14.2 or later on Intel or Apple silicon. AU, VST3 and AAX sender plugins. A sender subscription is required; browser listeners are free.
Input and setup
Insert Playback Send on the stereo bus, choose the quality before starting, and share the listening link. A browser listener opens the link and presses play without creating an account or installing a plugin.
Working with it
Use the stream for listening and mix review, with a separate call for conversation. Playback Receive provides a native receiving route. Review the device and quality requirements before choosing the stream format.
Before the session
Up to five simultaneous listeners, with lower limits for the highest Studio formats. Each subscription includes 200 GB per monthly anniversary, counting delivery to each listener. Unused delivery does not roll over; streaming stops at the allowance until reset, without automatic overage charges.

Before the first session

Avoid monitoring the same music through the call and a separate stream simultaneously. Test the listener's output device and keep a microphone from feeding the mix back into itself.

Questions before choosing

Does Zoom have a music mode?

Yes. Zoom documents Original sound for musicians and options including high-fidelity music mode and stereo audio. Those settings must be configured for the intended setup.

When should I choose SESSION™ Playback instead?

Keep Zoom for the conversation and add SESSION™ Playback when you want a dedicated stereo DAW feed. If Zoom’s correctly configured music mode already meets the need, test that before adding a subscription.

What does Zoom cost compared with SESSION™ Playback?

Zoom Workplace Basic: $0. Zoom Workplace Pro: $15.99 per user monthly. A meeting plan and a dedicated DAW stream solve different jobs. Configure Zoom’s music settings before evaluating its audio. SESSION™ Playback costs $9.99 a month or $59 a year.
