The workflow difference
Serato documents key and BPM analysis options and warns that reanalysis can overwrite manual changes. Traktor documents beatgrids and harmonic mixing. VirtualDJ's manual covers BPM and key analysis. The comparison starts with the app already holding the music collection.
For a prepared DJ library, first inspect the analysis already available. For an external reference while writing in another app, assess a Mac-wide reader. Avoid reanalyzing an entire collection just to answer a question about one passage.
SESSION™ Key at a glance
- Price
- $49 once
- Requirements
- macOS 14.4 or later on Apple silicon. One license covers up to three Macs.
- Input and setup
- Read system audio, use the microphone, or drop an audio or MIDI file on the menu bar. Live analysis follows the passage playing; a file gives the analyzer a different span of material.
- Working with it
- Optional Beta sends connect the reading to supported DAWs and Auto-Tune. The fields and setup vary by destination. Check the integration guide before purchasing for a particular send.
- Before the session
- The outline marks a locked reading; green and amber communicate confidence separately. A locked reading can still be uncertain. Listen, check the musical context, and use the half-time or double-time control when the pulse needs it.
Before the first session
Keep manually corrected beatgrids and key tags backed up. Check each app's current edition, hardware requirements and license; these are separate products with separate terms.

Questions before choosing
Should a DJ buy another analyzer before checking the existing app?
First check the current app's analysis, display format and tag behavior. A separate tool earns its place when it handles a needed input or destination that the existing workflow does not.
When should I choose SESSION™ Key instead?
Choose SESSION™ Key when a reference needs to become a reading beside your open Mac session, followed by a supported project send. Use Serato DJ, Traktor and VirtualDJ first when you already work in its library or practice environment.
What does Serato DJ, Traktor and VirtualDJ cost compared with SESSION™ Key?
Serato DJ Pro: $11.99/month or $299 once. Traktor Pro 4: $149 once. VirtualDJ Pro: $19/month. These are broader DJ products. An existing licensed DJ setup may already supply the analysis you need; a separate detector is optional. SESSION™ Key costs $49 once.
