Mixed In Key is a library and set-prep product line that also sells a live reader; Session™ Key is only the live reader. The real difference is scope, not score

Mixed In Key sells a line of products. Their own site groups them for DJs and for producers, and it includes Mixed In Key 11, a Pro version for mashups and transitions, a Studio Edition plugin, and Mixed In Key Live for real-time analysis of anything playing on your computer.

Session™ Key is one app that does one of those jobs. It sits in the menu bar, listens to what your Mac is already playing, and answers the question you asked. There is no library, no tagging, no playlist builder and no cue points.

So the honest framing is not which product is better. It is how much of your week is spent preparing files versus how much is spent inside a session with the clock running.

What each product says about accuracy

Mixed In Key's page for version 11 says the new results are “at least 10% more accurate than any software that has ever existed”, and their shop describes Mixed In Key 11 as offering “the most accurate key detection available”. Their page does not say what that was measured against or how it was measured.

We publish no accuracy number at all, and that is deliberate. A published figure turns a product into an argument about a figure, and the reader still has no way to check it.

What we publish instead is behavior, because you can test behavior in about ten seconds:

• Play a drum loop. A read that comes back with no key is the correct answer, because there is no tonal center in it to be sure of.
• Play something ambiguous. The ring should show you it is still deciding rather than presenting a guess as an answer.
• Play a single one-shot. You should get its note, not an invented key and not an invented tempo.

A tool that tells you when it is unsure is worth more in a session than a tool that is confident every time, because you only find out the confident one was wrong after you have built on it.
